Petroleum Operations Notice 1

Dispersants are not appropriate to treat every type of oil. The MFA, in collaboration with the Oil and Gas Office of the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), has produced advice for the Offshore Oil and Gas industry on the use of dispersants in response to spills of diesel and similar refined oils.

This advice has been issued as Annex 4 to the guidance note on Petroleum Operations Notice No 1 which is available on DECC's web site.

The MFA also advises the Counter Pollution Branch of the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) on the risks to marine life when hazardous cargoes are lost at sea.
