Marine works
The Marine and Fisheries Agency adminsters a range of statutory controls that apply to marine works, including construction, coastal defences, dredging and the disposal of waste materials in the sea. This is done on behalf of the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and covers English, UK and in some cases Welsh waters.
From 1 April 2010, the Welsh Assembly Government’s Marine Consents Unit (MCU) are taking over the administration of all new applications for licences under the Food and Environment Protection Act 1985 (FEPA) and consents under the Coast Protection Act 1949 (CPA) for activities in Welsh waters. For details of how to apply please contact the MCU.
The main controls apply to:
- Food and Environment Protection Act 1985 Part II (Deposits in the Sea)
- Coast Protection Act 1949
- Telecommunications Act 1984
- Other Legislation - such as local harbours Acts
The MFA also processes applications for:
- Burial at sea of human remains
- Approval of oil spill treatment / dispersant products
- Wildlife Licences under the Offshore Marine Regulations
