MFA recruitment

Making waves in the marine environment....

The Marine & Fisheries Agency (MFA) is an Executive Agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). We employ 200 staff, with around 100 people based in our HQ in London and our remaining teams based in one of our 18 coastal offices around the UK.

We are relocating our HQ functions from London to Newcastle Tyneside and are currently recruiting for a number of roles to support our HQ functions.

The Marine & Coastal Access Bill is currently moving through Parliament and will result in the formation of a new Non-Departmental Public Body called the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) which we expect to be operational in the Spring 2010. The core of the new MMO will be formed from the existing MFA, whose staff and remit will transfer to the new MMO alongside new functions arising from the Bill.

As a delivery agency for Defra, we carry out a varied range of responsibilities. Here’s a quick summary of some of the important work we do:

  • Fishing vessel licensing and economic links

  • Management of UK fleet capacity

  • Enforcement of sea fisheries legislation and implementation of EU marketing regime

  • Management of UK fisheries quotas

  • Biological sampling of fish and shellfish

  • Fishing industry grants

  • Data Collection Regulation (EC) 1543/2000

  • Management, recording and provision of data on fishing activities and catches

  • Consents for marine construction, dredging and disposal activities

  • Licensing of marine aggregates dredging

  • Monitoring, control and enforcement of marine construction sites in Accordance with the Food and Environment Protection Act (FEPA) 1985

  • Monitoring, control and enforcement of the Offshore Marine and Conservation Regulations for implementing the EU Habitats and Wildbirds Directive

  • Major oil spills and pollution incidents at sea, approval of treatment products for use in maritime spills and their specific use in shallow and coastal waters

As you might expect, our people have a wide range of skills, expertise and impressive backgrounds which include: marine and fisheries sciences, the fishing industry, enforcement, Royal Navy, Merchant Navy, hydrography, administration and statistics.

Further information about our current vacancies, selection process and guidance are provided within these pages. Having had explored more about MFA and Defra through our websites, we hope you will consider joining MFA and working with us to make an impact in the marine environment. We look forward to hearing from you.
