Other statistics

  • The Community Fleet Register application (FRONT - Fleet Register On the Net) provides data on fishing vessels of EU Member States, including the UK.

  • Both the Scottish Government Marine Directorate (SGMD) and Department of Agriculture & Rural Development for Northern Ireland (DARD) produce summary statistics that relate to the activity of vessels based in Scotland and Northern Ireland, respectively.

  • Fact sheets and statistics on all aspects of fishing (including interactive maps that you can browse and visualize in real time) can be found on the Fisheries Global Information System (FGIS). This is maintained by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) Fisheries department.

  • Information on the fishing fleet is obtained from the Register of Shipping & Seamen, part of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency, an executive agency of the Department of Transport. Each UK Fisheries Department uses the information from the register as part of controlling the licensing of fishing vessels in the UK.

  • The Portcullis Archive Catalogue. Parliamentary Papers can be accessed on the Portcullis web site in large libraries with a subscription, such as university libraries. You can't download anything at all from the online Portcullis catalogue; it's a catalogue of descriptions, there are no documents attached.

  • The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) examines and investigates all types of marine accidents to or on board UK ships worldwide, and other ships in UK territorial waters.
